‘Harry Potter’ overtakes ‘Star Wars’ as most profitable U.S. franchise ever

Warner Bros.

We have finally found a group of people capable of taking down the Jedi, and it just so happens to be a group of young wizards from Hogwarts.

Here in America, it has been announced that thanks to the recent eighth film in the franchise, the “Harry Potter” saga has grossed so far the grand total of $2.223 billion. This beats out the “Stars” Wars” franchise’s total gross, which is at $2.217 billion. (However, “Star Wards” is easily ahead of “Potter” once you actually adjust the numbers for inflation.)

Another major achievement for the franchise is simply that “Potter” has managed the honor of passing the $7 billion mark in global gross. This really just distances it even further from the rest of the pack, as the film series was already the top franchise ever before the new movie ever came out and started to shatter records.

How impressive do you find these two records, and do you anticipate anyone beating them at some point in the future?
