Just as we predicted earlier in the week, Phillip Phillips was ultimately crowned the winner of “American Idol” on Wednesday night. It ultimately was a close race between him and Jessica Sanchez, but what really seemed to tip matters in his favor was a stellar coronation song in “Home” — which has since gone on to be #1 on iTunes.
Phillip’s success was just one subject touched on during his conference call with reporters on Thursday — as he also talked about his unique sound, his girlfriend, and his upcoming kidney surgery.
On pressure placed on him to achieve success – “It’s pretty crazy, but I’m not trying to do something too mainstream or not me … I’m ready to just meet cool people who enjoy the music I put out.”
On choosing “Home” as a coronation song – “They kind of just threw that song out there and thought it was the right fit for me. I wanted to do a song that I had written, but with the short about of time [it wasn’t possible to set up].”
On his individual sound – “Kind of like jazz and rock, acoustic stuff.”
On why he got emotional during his closing performances Wednesday – “I didn’t want to sing or anything. I was just so shocked, and I was thinking about the top 12 … I just got a little emotional.”
On his upcoming surgery – “It’s my right kidney that isn’t functioning. I have a stent that’s helping [it out until the operation.” (Phillip did not say when the operation is or where, but that it is going to be happening “soon.”)
On if he will move away from Georgia – “I think I’m most likely going to be moving. I going to be going after things, and you have to be in the right places.”
On Jessica Sanchez’s reaction to his win – “She was just so proud of me. She said that she knew it, but I thought that she was going to win it.”
On his girlfriend – We didn’t get a direct quote here, but Phillip said that she was supportive of everything, and he is hoping she will go on at least part of the tour with him.
Were you rooting for Phillip throughout the season, and do you think we are going to remember him a year from now after the release of his debut album?
