‘American Idol’ finale: Winner Phillip Phillips, Steven Tyler speak out

He's now the champion.

Now that this season of “American Idol” is over, it’s time to sit back and reflect — or for Phillip Phillips, to try and understand that he just won one of the most-coveted prizes in all of reality television.

Speaking after the show to reporters, the small-town pawn shop worker from Georgia tried his best to sum up his emotions — including why he walked offstage before he even finished his performance of “Home” — his winner’s song from the season::

“I don’t really feel anything … Its crazy I’m still a little numb from the whole situation it’s just so unreal. Did I think I was gonna win? Heck no. It’s so unreal. It hasn’t sunk in yet. It’s such a blessing to have, I’m kinda ready to try and comprehend it all. After I won, I wasn’t thinking about anything. I wasn’t thinking about the song, I wasn’t wanting to sing or anything. I just started thinking about the journey and how far all of us have come and how far we made it, it’s so overwhelming. Jessica has a huge future ahead of her and we’re both supportive of each other. I love playing music and I’m just a lucky guy.”

Meanwhile, Steven Tyler also explained backstage that one of the reasons behind Phillip’s win was his choice in coronations songs — as no one really connecting to Jessica Sanchez’s “Change Nothing” on any sort of real level. Tyler also said that he, unlike Jennifer Lopez, is not debating his future on the show — he wants to stay put for at least another year or two. (As to whether or not he should, that is a different story.)

Now that you’ve had some time to think about it, do you think that America ended up making the right or wrong decision?
