‘American Idol’ notes: Adam Lambert beats out Carrie Underwood for #1

Adam may have #1.

For our second “American Idol” notes for Tuesday, we are looking mostly at album sales — and it’s certainly some good news for fans of Adam Lambert out there.

According to some new predictions from HITS Daily Double, Adam’s “Trespassing” release is likely to score a #1 debut when the SoundScan numbers are made available on Wednesday. This will be the first time Adam has reached the pinnacle of the chart with original music if the numbers turn out as expected, and he is predicted to have sold anywhere from 70-80,000 copies of his album. It’s a strong debut considering that this is both a May release and neither single as of yet has managed to pick up much play on the radio.

Update: New predictions make it pretty much official — Adam is going to be #1 with close to 78,000 copies sold. Meanwhile, “Blown Away” by another fellow “Idol” in Carrie Underwood went lower than our original expectations in week 3 with just over 52,000 copies. This places her behind Adele at #3.

For those of you curious about iTunes sales (especially when you consider that there are two new “Idols” in Kris Allen and Haley Reinhart with new releases in stores Tuesday), here is what the four contestants mentioned in this article stand as of this writing:

4. “Blown Away”

6. Kris Allen’s “Thank You Camellia” (new release, deluxe edition)

7. “Trespassing” (deluxe edition)

8. Haley Reinhart’s “Listen Up!” (new release, deluxe edition)

We’ll update this post early Wednesday when the official numbers are released in order to say whether or not Adam does in fact score a #1 with the album.
