After weeks and weeks of rankings, we’ve finally made it to the end of this season of “American Idol.” So who is actually going to come out on top? It’s a worthy question to ask, and it is one that you can definitely debate.
So with this in mind, we’re doing our rankings a bit differently than usual this week — we’re not only ranking who we think of the two will win, but also who we think should based on the entire season’s body of work.
Who should win
2. Phillip Phillips – In looking over Phillip’s entire body of work, there are some hits — but also quite a few misses. We’re not sure there has been an “Idol” winner who has had so many performances a la “Time of the Season,” “That’s All,” and “Give a Little More” that are either middle-of-the-road or just out of tune.
Granted, Phillip has managed to surge in recent weeks thanks to “Volcano,” “Beggin’,” and “We’ve Got Tonight” — and with that, it’s hard to complain about him being here, even if we personally preferred Joshua Ledet. Much of this is about timing, and Phillip is finding himself at the right time.
1. Jessica Sanchez – Along with Joshua, Jessica has been the best vocalist ever since the beginning of the live rounds. Just look at some of her history so far — “I Will Always Love You,” “Love You I Do,” “How Will I Know,” “Sweet Dreams,” “And I Am Telling You I’m Not going,” and even “Stuttering” (which caused her to nearly leave the competition) were all great moments.
We know that Jessica is not a handsome southern male with a guitar, but she shouldn’t be penalized in the voting for it. The only thing we’re worried about is that her Aerosmith and Jackson 5 covers last week were not spectacular, and she needs to blow Phillip out of the water this coming week for her to have a shot at winning.
Who will win
2. Jessica Sanchez – Let’s look at this from the standpoint of history. Fantasia is the only winner in “Idol” history to have won despite being in the bottom three at some point (though she was up in the finale against someone else in Diana DeGarmo who also had experience in the bottom). In other words, she’s got her work cut out for her.
Do we think that Jessica has more overall fans than Phillip? Probably, but the issue here is that many of Jessica’s fans are not located in a place where they can vote for her to win her competition (such as around the world — which is why she has so many more YouTube hits and her support base seems so much larger).
1. Phillip Phillips – Meanwhile, Phillip has almost all of the south voting for him — and this is an incredible voting block that has carried Scotty McCreery, Kris Allen, and many others in the past. In some ways, being from a small town actually benefits someone when compared to being from a big city or a major suburb.
The other thing Phillip has going for him when it comes to voters (especially of the young female variety) is that he’s a sympathy pick — it’s pretty admirable that the guy has hung in there for weeks despite being in some serious pain thanks to his kidneys, and while he should not win based on that it will likely earn him some additional votes.
