’30 Rock’ finale review: Liz takes a leap forward

Did Liz and Jack make progress?

With the revelation now that “30 Rock” is about to start up on its final season, we knew that there would have to be some movement forward on some stories during the season 6 finale.

When it comes to Jack, you knew that his relationship with Avery was going to be tested even more. Why? Her mother, and the subtle hope that someone would come in and mess up a relationship she was not really ready for. At the end of the day, we all knew that thanks to Elizabeth Banks’ busy schedule, there really wasn’t any way that she and Jack were going to stay together forever. After all, she also fell in love with Scott Scotsman while in North Korea (which in itself made for a thoroughly entertaining scene near the end of the episode, right when Jack and Avery were trying to renew their vows.

As for the rest of the episode, there was a welcome surprise — rather than seeing her run away from her relationship with Criss, she actually ended up embracing it after he gave up his hot dog truck in order to renovate a room for a potential baby. It was the first major leap forward in a relationship that has been goofy, and may not have started off as something that Tina Fey saw as lasting for the long run.

With these two stories (coupled with Hazell trying to seduce Kenneth as a way to allow herself to keep mooching off of his kindness), this was ultimately an eventful episode that contained many laughs, but also gave us a bit of an idea as to what the future will hold. We still hope that Jack finds love with someone who is not a Jessup, and that Liz and Criss somehow find a way to go the distance.

What did you think about the finale?
