If Capt. Gates does not appear in episode 1 everyone will expect Beckett to make a career decision or postpone it for a very short time. Introduction of new characters will also need to be made in the first few episodes to fill the voids of personnel shifts. Please, please, please do not get into long story arcs like Castle’s disappearance, the wedding and 3xk. They soon become unrealistic and boring in the wait. Every case should be solved in 2 episodes.
