It’s that time of year again where millions of fans are handed bad news — and for viewers of “The Secret Circle,” they learned in a rather stunning fashion Friday that their favorite series would not be returning for a second season.
What happened? It’s hard to say — “Nikita” drew lower ratings consistently on Friday and was renewed, and “Hart of Dixie” also is returning despite posting similar numbers. It’s likely that what got “Secret Circle” in trouble was losing so much of its “Vampire Diaries” lead-in audience, as it was only retaining 50% of the 18-49 viewership by the end of the season.
Despite these numbers, fans are still not giving up. There are multiple petitions that are online already (see another one here) to save the show, though there has yet to be a grand campaign mobilized by the fans yet. While it’s unlikely that any such campaign would effectively save the show, it would at least allow The CW to realize that there were more diehard viewers for this series than they initially thought.
“The Secret Circle” could be replaced on Thursday night by a number of series, though one of the most-likely candidates are the superhero drama “Arrow” or “Cult” — which stars “TVD” alum Matt Davis (Alaric) in a lead role.
Are you still stunned about “The Secret Cirlce’s” end?
