There’s no questioning that “The Amazing Spider-Man” is one of the most-anticipated movies of 2012 — but is it going to be worth the hype? Based on the first trailer for the film that we have seen, it’s going to vary depending on whether you compare this film to “Spider-Man 3,” or some of the earlier Tobey Maguire movies.
Let’s start with the positive. Andrew Garfield seems perfectly cast as the web-slinger, and he brings back more of the lanky look to the character that Maguire could never offer with his frame. It is also nice to see Gwen Stacy (played by Emma Stone) as she originally presented in some comic adaptations, and the romance here could very well turn out to be fulfilling.
Now, we move on to what has us concerned. The final minute of this trailer is way too heavy on the CGI, and that was one of the problems that started to doom the Maguire trilogy over time. While it’s impossible to do “Spider-Man” without effects, they have to be integrated in a way that is more seamless with the live-action segments. Movie-goers are not going to be as impressed with the effects here as they will be the story, and we simply haven’t seen enough of that yet to know whether or not this will be worthwhile.
Finally, there’s one other question that you have to ask — are people going to get excited here about a film that is rebooting a franchise that is still fresh in viewers’ minds? Only time will tell based on the receipts.
What do you think of this trailer?
