‘American Idol’ exit chat: Hollie Cavanagh on elimination, judges’ comments

Hollie was sent packing.

Hollie Cavanagh ended up having quite a run for herself on “American Idol” this season. Despite being in the bottom three on multiple occasions, she was able to rally back time after time — even to the point where she started to become a genuine darkhorse to win the whole competition.

Unfortunately, a criticized performance of “I Can’t Make You Love Me” — coupled with some game-changers from Phillip Phillips, Jessica Sanchez, and Joshua Ledet — ended up leading to her exit on Thursday night’s results show.

On Friday, Hollie talked a bit about this performance in a conference call with reporters, in addition to a few other topics.

On the judges’ comments – “I definitely stand by that song and I love that song and I thought the lyrics were so beautiful … as far as what Jimmy said, I definitely felt that song and I understood the meaning. It didn’t come across the way that Jimmy wanted it to.”

On singing her “Eternal Flame” duet with Jessica while on the swings – “It was interesting, but it was a lot of fun. We kept trying to swing high during rehearsals and get in trouble.”

On feeling like she was about to go home before her elimination – “There was definitely something different about the day. I’m not sure what it was. Maybe it was just my gut telling me … I’m not quite sure what the feeling was.”

On what she and the other contestants did for fun – “We would hang out at the house or go and get some dinner … we don’t really go crazy because we’re so tired.”

On if the fans rallied around her after the judges’ criticism – “A lot of people thought that the judges were really hard on me, but I took it in a positive way to keep fighting. I think [the fans] had my back and got me through week after week.”

On her invisible edit for much of the early part of this season – “At the beginning I was a bit like [‘where am I?’, and I had to reassure my friends I was still on] … I got showed in Vegas Week, and I think it helped me in a sense [to be seen then]. I had 20 different thoughts in my mind as to why I wasn’t shown.”

Are you sad to see Hollie go, and who do you think out of the remaining singers is the most likely to end up winning?
