Season finales are not just important when it comes to providing (temporary) closure for a storyline — it also is a good way to gauge whether or not a show really has a dedicated fanbase who will tune in live.
With this in mind, Thursday night’s season finale of “The Secret Circle” is huge for the show. If the ratings can go back up to a 0.6 or a 0.7 in the 18-49 demographic (which is where they were for much of the first season), we would feel rather confident about the show coming back. We’ve already posted in our ratings debate that the odds are definitely in its favor, but an extra dose of momentum Thursday night could push the show over the top.
If you look at the current state of The CW schedule — and immediately write off “The L.A. Complex” and “Ringer,” which are both pretty much good as gone at this point — you are left with three shows squarely on the bubble in “Secret Circle,” “Nikita,” and “Hart of Dixie.” Of these three, two will probably come back for another season. Which two? We’ve got our money on “Circle” for sure, and we’re leaning towards “Hart of Dixie” over “Nikita” based not just on higher 18-49 ratings, but that the show tends to fit better into the target female audience that network head Mark Pedowitz seems to covet. (We said that “Nikita,” while a fun show, really doesn’t have much of a chance — and a new TVbythenumbers source also says that the show is as good as dead.)
Does “Nikita” have a chance if the finale next week if the ratings go up? Sure, but it’s going to need to have almost all of its DVR audience tune in live (which doesn’t seem likely in any shape or form). The CW still seems likely to pair “Supernatural” next season up with “Arrow” — their new superhero drama that is already generating buzz.
Do you think a strong finale performance could help either of these shows?
