‘The Vampire Diaries’ preview: First look at season finale, Elijah’s return

Meet Elena's parents.

If you were shocked by what you saw on the penultimate episode of “The Vampire Diaries” season 3 Thursday night, just get ready for what the finale has in store. There will be blood, there will be tears … and there will be plenty of flashbacks.

As you probably know by now, we are going to meet Elena’s parents for the first time during the episode as we go back in time to see what her life was like before a certain car drove off Rickety Bridge — and events are also going to come full-circle courtesy of Matt (with Elena in the passenger’s seat) sending his car off of the same bridge rather than hit a certain Original on the road.

Speaking of Originals, Elijah is going to be making his return to Mystic Falls next week, and we have to believe it may be connected to the theory that Klaus may actually be dead. However, remember that this is for now just a theory, since it seems to be hard to imagine the show moving forward without a villain of this magnitude. (While Alaric is still around, there is not the same sort of complexity to his super-vampire character.)

As for spoilers, all we can really tell you at the moment is to expect plenty of violence, death, and also a decision coming concerning Elena’s love life. This doesn’t mean that she will necessarily choose between the Salvatore brothers, but she will at least make her intentions known.

What do you want to see happen during the finale?
