‘American Idol’ theme spoilers: Hollie Cavanagh, California, and David Cook

We now know the theme.

There are now only four contestants left on “American Idol,” and we now know just what they will be performing on May 9 as we inch ever closer to the finale: songs themed in some way around the state of California.

We’re not entirely sure what a “California Dreamin'” theme is meant to sound like, but we do know that Katy Perry has a similarly-named tour in “California Dreams” even though there is likely not a connection there at all. (Our guess is like with British Week, the contestants are just taking on a song by a California artist — but who knows? The show is known to pull a surprise here or there.)

David Cook is set to perform on the results show May 10 with his new single “The Last Song I’ll Write For You,” while Jennifer Lopez is also set to take to the stage with her hit “Dance Again” (possibly with Pitbull in tow).

We’re going to have highlights from the Skylar Laine conference call later Friday, but we have to close with this — does anyone else find the top 4 photo above awkward? Hollie Cavanagh is either trying to take center stage, or she is holding back all of the other contestants from cake that the photographer has sitting behind them on a table.

What do you think about the theme for next week’s show, and who are you rooting for now?
