’30 Rock’ review: The return of ‘Queen of Jordan’

She's back...

Following a rather hilarious (and celebrity-stuffed) live episode, it’s hard to debate that “30 Rock” had its work cut out for it this week. How do you live up to those high standards? By bringing back another show favorite!

Thursday night marked the return of “The Real Housewives” spoof “Queen of Jordan,” and it provided more than just mere laughs here — there was also some great movement forward in the story. While we’ve never really liked the whole storyline with Jack and Avery’s mother-in-law, they had to spend the entire episode trying to hide the romantic sparks between them in front of the Bravo cameras — even to the point where Jack had to start kissing everyone (including Liz) as a way to make it appear less obvious that he was doing something special with his new forbidden fruit.

The real reason for the tension spiraling was that Avery is finally coming home from North Korea, and her character will play a key role in the remainder of the season as we try to figure out just where this relationship ends up going.

Outside of the Jack story, everything else was pure hilarity — from Angie staging her fashion show during Jack’s dinner party as a way of getting back at him to Tracy giving her the ultimately gift to show his love — not doing anything, and thus staging a huge fight between the two that will make for great reality TV drama. From the choppy editing to the issues in continuity, there is no better spoof of what reality TV has become out there. (The brief “fight” between Kenneth and a cord was worth watching back more than once.)

While we actually felt the first “Queen of Jordan” was a little bit before its time, this one felt familiar and was better for it. We’ve said this before, but it’s worth repeating — is there any other show out there this strong six seasons in? Hats off to Tina Fey, Robert Carlock, and the rest of the team for finding a way to still be original (and so funny) past the 100-episode mark.
