If you think that “The Bachelor” is the only dating show that network television needs, you are probably groaning at all of the other shows entering the ratings sweepstakes. “Love in the Wild” is airing season 2 this summer, and both “Desperate Housewives” star Eva Longoria and some of the folks behind “The X Factor” are also bringing some new programs to TV later this year.
Now, we’ve caught word of yet another dating show — and this one features Cat Deeley of “So You Think You Can Dance” front and center as a host. The show is entitled “The Choice” — and if you did not think that this title in itself was ripping off “The Voice,” just wait until you hear the premise. Four celebrities sit with their backs to people auditioning on the stage, but rather than trying to sing, they are instead trying to convince the stars to go out with them. A star will turn their chair around once they like what they hear, and then decide if they like what they see.
We do understand the appeal of this show to Fox, as the best part of “The Voice” is their blind auditions. However, do you really need so many dating shows on during the summer? The success here is also going to depend on if you can get some genuine celebrities to appear, and that’s what we are a little bit skeptical about.
The show is the brainchild in part of Fox alternative programming head Mike Darnell, and it premieres Thursday, June 7 at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time. You can check out a first-look trailer at the show below.
