If you like your physical violence mixed in with your “Saturday Night Live,” then you are probably going to love the brand-new promo just released by NBC for this weekend’s new episode. Why? Let’s just say that it features one of America’s most enjoyable pastimes — watching people get hit with a ball.
Rather than this being an old-school “America’s Funniest Home Videos” gag, host Eli Manning guest for the shoulder when tossing a football at cast member Kenan Thompson — who is his typical goofy self in the promo. (There is also a nice nod to “The Voice” thrown in here via Jason Sudeikis, who tries to pick Eli for his team — but the Super Bowl champ opts for another cast member for a rather hilarious reason.)
Will Eli actually be funny? Athletes have a mixed track record on a show like this, but his brother Peyton actually did produce a few memorable gags when he hosted back in 2007. The real test here is trying to get some sketches together that make light of his football success, but also stretch him just enough so that he is not just doing the same thing from one bit to the next.
Rihanna is going to be the musical guest for the show, and at least she does a bring a certain veteran presence to the mix (especially courtesy of some of her “Shy Ronnie” Digital Shorts with Andy Samberg).
Do you think that Eli is going to do a good job as a host?
