There are a number of details pouring in about Tuesday night’s new episode of “Glee” (entitled “Choke”) from across the internet, but there is one element to this episode that is not getting talked about enough — the performance of Dot-Marie Jones as Coach Beiste during the hour.
When Jones was nominated last for year for a Guest Actress Emmy Award, we thought she actually deserved to win it over Gwyneth Paltrow. This week, we are getting an episode that may turn her into a favorite to run away with the award in 2012. We don’t want to give away every detail of what happens, but we can basically sum it up by saying the following — a secret comes out about Coach Beiste’s relationship with Cooter, and the end results of this are both emotional and rather devastating. It certainly restores new layers to a character who had been resorted to a punchline through season 3, and it is exciting to see it happening at a time when so many other characters are getting more opportunities to shine due to graduation.
Just in case you are also a fan of some of the other adult actors on the show, NeNe Leakes is also going to be back (as you can see in the promo below) as Roz Washington, and she and Sue Sylvester are going to be up again to some old tricks. As for Will and Emma, expect them to take more of a backseat this week thanks largely to the auditions of Kurt and Rachel to NYADA coupled with Puck trying to get himself together so that he can graduate.
Do you think that the Beiste has been at times underutilized this season, especially since she and Mike O’Malley may really be the hidden gems of this show?
