Every year, the worlds of politics and celebrity collide at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, but over the years the list of stars’ has expanded in ways never though before possible. After all, one of the most-controversial networks in media (including Fox News) have managed to bring plenty of controversial people along for the ride.
E! star Kim Kardashian is one of the guests being brought by the network along with Lindsay Lohan (who actually missed her first flight out to Washington DC Friday). So why bring these sorts of people along? Really, you just have to chalk it up to one thing — the people give them the power. Both Kim and Lindsay have nearly 20 million followers on Twitter, and this is the sort of audience that people in politics are really looking for. They read their stories in the tabloids, watch them on TV, and then look up pictures of them on the internet. It brings these sort of Washington events to the mainstream.
The criticism of Kim being present this year is only surprising in that she was also in attendance last year, but at that time (prior to her 72-day marriage to Kris Humphries) her name was not in as many headlines. Not everyone may be fans, but it’s hard to ignore at this point the sort of impact that she and her entire family has on the world of pop culture.
Do you think that reality TV stars and tabloid fixtures are worthy of attending this dinner, or is it rather unfair of us to try and view them on a lower level than actors and other celebrities attending this dinner? We are going to have full coverage of the Correspondents’ Dinner later in the evening, as Jimmy Kimmel will be the providing the entertaining for President Barack Obama and the rest of the audience.
