The first official cast member for “Dexter” season 7 has been announced, and on paper, this looks like it could be very good news for those of us who want to see Miami Metro return to the winning ways of the past.
According to TVLine, Ray Stevenson of “Rome” fame has been cast to play the role of a man deeply involved in an Eastern European mob, and he ends up arriving in Miami after one of his associates is found dead in the city.
Is Stevenson going to be the “Big Bad” of this season? We actually hope not, mostly because that would be predictable considering some of the show’s recent habit of having Dexter face off against menacing villains who are all white men at least somewhere near the same age bracket. What we are hoping instead is that Hannah — the other announced character this season who could be a potential love interest — turns out to be who Dexter faces off against instead. We haven’t seen a female villain since Lila in season 2, and it would also be nice to see how Dexter handles going up against someone who operates from a completely different mindset than Trinity, the Ice Truck Killer, or Doomsday from last season (which we are mostly trying to forget about). While Stevenson’s character may have an Eastern European angle that is distinct, we have seen plenty of gangs and crime rings already on the show.
Season 7 of “Dexter” will premiere on Sunday, September 30 at 9:00 p.m. Eastern, and will be followed up immediately by “Homeland.” Let’s just hope that the villain this season (whoever it is) gets to do more than talk to someone who is actually already dead, and that the cliffhanger from the finale with Deb becomes a turning point for the show as a whole.
