Goyte has become one of the hottest artists on the planet after his single ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ burned up the charts to the number one spot, leaving everyone under the sun trying to get a piece of that song including the masterminds behind ‘Glee’.
Once the producers of ‘Glee’ got their hands on the song they changed the tone of the song from two lovers singing to each other to two brothers (Darren Criss and Matt Bomer) who were estranged, but trying to find some sort of middle ground that they could reconnect on. While fans of course went crazy over the ‘Glee’ version of ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’, Goyte himself was not exactly impressed telling the Sunday Herald Sun that the series made the song sound “dinky and wrong.” He said;
“They did such a faithful arrangement of the instrumentals, but the vocals were that pop Glee style, ultra-dry, sounded pretty tuned and the rock has no real sense. Like it’s playing to you from a cardboard box.”
We’re not exactly sure what he expected the song to sound like since it was featured on ‘Glee’ and they do sing their songs in a ‘Glee style’, but the week after ‘Glee’ featured the song on the show, Goyte’s song finally hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100 after being on there for fifteen weeks. To be fair Goyte did also appear on Saturday Night Live that week as well, but we’ve all seen the heavy influence that ‘Glee’ can have over the music charts, so the rise on the chart is likely related to the publicity from the show.
The ‘Glee version also hit the Billboard Hot 100, debuting at #26 as well as reaching #10 on the Digital song charts.
