Last week, “Saturday Night Live” delivered a show that we felt was consistently one of the best of the entire season. There were only one or two sketches that we found to be below par, and thanks to the musical guest One Direction, the show also had the luxury of an immense amount of hype. (Strangely, all of this only resulted in average ratings.)
This time around, it’s already easy to say that the bar has been set high for Josh Brolin. It’s been a couple of years since he has been in the spotlight, but Brolin has the luxury of being an “SNL” host before, and he knows what sort of pressure ends up coming with being on live television and trying to tackle so many characters in a short span of time. Unfortunately, the lack of laughs in his initial promo with Fred Armisen failed to do much to get us excited.
Thankfully, our faith was somewhat restored courtesy of the new “SNL” promo, which featured Brolin alongside Kristen Wiig and what may be one of only reasons why this episode feels current — Gotye, whose “Somebody That I Used to Know” is being played on just about every radio station out there (not to mention being covered on three separate shows this past week).
The best joke in this promo actually came when Wouter De Backer himself proclaimed that he had no idea how his stage name is supposed to be pronounced. As for Kristen Wiig’s prom date joke, that is more in line with traditional “SNL” preview fare.
What are your expectations like for Brolin’s show at the moment?
