Modern Week has been a long time coming on “American Idol,” in particular since we just sat through a group of songs that were older than almost everyone left in the competition.
This time around, though, all of the songs have to be from this decade, which should at least boost the show’s iTunes sales if nothing else. Before we give out some predictions, here’s what we actually know right now in terms of scoop along with some personal speculation:
-According to Nigel Lythgoe, there are going to be two performances of Kelly Clarkson songs during the show. While we’re already begging in our minds to have Jessica Sanchez show off a rock side with “Stronger,” we could also see Skylar Laine taking on “Don’t You Wanna Stay” in a duet with Phillip Phillips in the Jason Aldean role.
-Speaking of duets, one of these is going to be set to Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” — which we are still proclaiming “the song loved by cool people everywhere.” Is anyone else thinking here Colton Dixon and Elise Testone?
-Nigel hinted at Elise doing Lady Gaga’s “You and I” as her solo number, and we hope that this isn’t true mostly because Haley Reinhart has become more synonymous with the song now than Gaga. (We don’t care what Randy Jackson says!)
It’s pretty clear to us that Elise and Hollie Cavanagh are the two contestants who are in desperate need to have some killer weeks moving forward, mostly because we almost seem to be locked in at the moment of a final four with Jessica, Colton, Phillip, and Joshua Ledet.
However, don’t sleep on Phillip being in trouble this week. Yes, we know that he is the guy that always wins this show (at least for the past five years), but his stubbornness is starting to catch up to him, while simultaneous his songs are getting a little stale. The man is begging for an “Idol” moment if he wants to stick around.
In looking at this show as currently constituted for Wednesday night, who do you think is in the most danger — and do you think we are almost at the point now where the save may very well be played by default during the results show?
