While we may not have seen any of them at all on “The Vampire Diaries” thus far, Nina Dobrev’s character of Elena did have parents once — and we are going to see them for the first time during the season 3 finale on May 10.
Rather than do something in conventional fashion (which in te modern day really is no fun), executive producer Julie Plec seems to be planning to shake things up in a big way. Speaking to TV Guide (who also first posted the photo above), she explains why it was important to end this season by taking a look back at a life for Elena before vampires entered the picture:
“One of the things we want to do in the finale is explore a time for Elena when life was simpler. She had parents and no vampires in her life.”
Is it possible that “TVD” could be exploring Elena trying to move away from supernatural life? We would certainly understand it — at least when it comes to the Salvatores and how they have treated her at times. However, she can’t really escape the fact that her brother now sees ghosts and her two best friends (in Bonnie and Caroline) are a witch and a vampire themselves.
For those curious, James MacDonald and Erin Buete (who looks a bit like Dobrev combined with a little bit of Torrey DeVitto) are the actors playing the parents. They aren’t likely to be on screen for very long, but we hope to still get some insight into how they treated their daughter before the accident on the bridge.
Do you think this is a smart move for the show to explore this territory for the finale? New episodes are set to return to The CW on April 19.
