We’ve said for weeks now that Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” is turning into the ultimately hipster anthem. It’s the song that has quite frankly become the one all the cool people like, and even the people who try to act condescending about it and say “we listened to it months before it was popular!” still have it on repeat in secret. It’s catchy, haunting, and even a tad heartbreaking; in some ways, it’s the unexpected pop hit of the year.
While these characteristics may not be perfect for “Somebody” as a selection many shows, it’s perfect for “Glee” — and hearing Darren Criss’ Blaine and Matt Bomer’s Cooper tackle it in the video below is a thing of musical perfection. While the song works a tad better with a male and a female voice, it’s hard to deny how well the two at least convey the anger and suble resentment present through the lyrics.
In between the auditorium performance bit of the scene between Cooper and Blaine, we also get some brief flashbacks to help paint a picture as to what sort of pain is really lying here behind the scenes. It’s obvious that the two did not have the best relationship growing up, but we’re not sure if there is anything here that could be the catalyst for the two becoming estranged enough to the point that they would be singing this to each other.
Of course, “Glee” performances also work the best when context is included. The show’s April 10 return is now only six days away, and we’ll have more video content for you as soon as it becomes available.
