After Season 7 broke the pattern by making the Christmas special part of the season, they’ve gone back to standalones. Thus the special won’t be the finale of Season 8, nor will it launch Season 9. We know this because the BBC is releasing the “Complete Series 8” DVD set in late November/early December (UK/North America) without it.
