‘American Idol’ notes: Carrie Underwood, Scotty McCreery rock ACM Awards

Scotty won Best New Artist.

In this special edition of “American Idol” notes, we’re going to focus entirely on a pair of past winners who made a big splash at the 2012 Academy of country music awards – Scotty McCreery and Carrie Underwood.

We’ll start with Carrie, mostly because she opened up the show with a rendition of new single “Good Girl” that was certainly energetic. Do we understand her carrying around a mic stand that seemingly had no purpose at all? Not really, but this really ended up adding to the allure of the performance as a whole. There was more pink featured here than we’ve possibly seen ever on the ACM stage, and it there’s no better compliment that we can give Carrie outside of saying that it was a great way to start the show. Unfortunately, Carrie not really releasing any new music at all in 2011 really inhibited her from taking home any of the big prizes on the night.

As for Scotty, he didn’t get anywhere near as much airtime with his take on “Water Tower Town” (which he performed on “Idol” Thursday night), as he was taking on the song at the ACM Fan Jam over at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. Does anyone else find it weird to see a teenager singer at a hotel famous for its casino? Anyhow, Scotty did a great job based on what we heard of the song, and he also introduced Brad Paisley to go up on the main stage at the MGM Grand.

Unlike Carrie, Scotty did manage to take home the Best New Artist trophy — which was no surprise at all, considering his success coupled with the fact that all of his fans on “Idol” were able to vote for him online.

Which one of these performances did you enjoy more?
