‘American Idol’ notes: Haley Reinhart’s new music, ‘Free’ video

Great news!

Since there’s so much good music coming out at the moment when it comes to Haley Reinhart, we would feel strange to focus this edition of our “American Idol” notes on anyone other than her.

We’ll start with the official release of her “Free” video Thursday. While we are aware that there are some versions of it that leaked a bit earlier in the week, this is really the quality we were waiting for — and it was worth the wait. While the video does not reinvent the wheel in any way at all, it does at least accomplish the basic goal of giving us some sort of visual representation to the song that suits Haley’s retro feel while also adding to the track’s emotional depth.

As for some other music, be sure to check out “Now That You’re Here,” a sensational jazz number that Haley performed during a set at 104.5 FM WXLO in Massachusetts this week. It’s probably a little closer to the style of music that many expected from Haley than “Free,” but we really are having a hard time deciding which song we actually like better. Both show off great dimensions to Haley’s voice, and now the real question is if this sort of pop / jazz can find its way to the mainstream in the same way that Adele has.

Haley’s new album “Listen Up” comes out on May 22, and it is quickly turning out to be a rather busy month when it comes to “Idol” releases.  Adam Lambert’s “Trespassing” hits stores on May 15, and Kris Allen has “Thank You Camellia” coming out on the 22nd. All three of these “Idol” alumni are making some great music, and we just hope that the marketplace allows them all the opportunity to shine.

What do you think of Haley’s video, and of this new song?
