Hugh Bonneville may be the lead on one of the most popular shows to hit television since ‘Lost’, but that doesn’t mean that he’s content to stay put.
Bonneville plays the very serious role of Lord Grantham in the British TV drama ‘Downton Abbey’ (otherwise known as the greatest show on the planet), but when speaking to the Radio Times, Hugh revealed that he would jump at the opportunity to snag a role on the hit Manchester comedy/drama ‘Shameless’. He said;
“God, I’d love to be given that opportunity, absolutely, who wouldn’t? “Every actor would love to be the complete opposite of what they are.”
The role of Lord Grantham is a difficult one with a lot of different layers. He constantly finds himself struggling not only to control his three free spirited daughters who constantly find ways to drive him crazy, but he is also trying to find balance between what his mother and wife want, while still battling his own insecurities and desires. When it comes to getting advice on this complex character, Bonneville will often turn to ‘Downton Abbey’ creator Julian Fellowes for guidance. He said;
“We talk all the time. The other day I went up to him and said, ‘Actually, I’m not sure about this, it doesn’t quite make sense.’ And he explained it in one line and I said, ‘Oh, I see exactly what you mean.’ He’s a far better actor than I am because he’s seen these characters in his head, so he knows their journey, their whys and wherefores.”
Season three of ‘Downton Abbey’ will be hitting the airwaves later this year and fans will finally have a chance to meet some of Lady Grantham’s family, as her mother (played by Shirley MacLaine) will be travelling from America to Britain to visit the family.
