‘American Idol’ preview: Heejun Han, Skylar Laine poised for big week

This week could be surprising.

Admittedly, there hasn’t been too much going on in the “American Idol” community since the last edition of our notes, so we decided to focus our news a bit differently leading up to the live show on Wednesday night.

Specifically, we have a rather all-important question here concerning the top 9: who is in the most trouble with “songs from your idols” week, and who could actually make a big week forward? In looking at history, you may be surprised here.

Contestant with the most to gain – Without a doubt, it’s Heejun Han. He has a chance to prove to America that not only does he take this competition seriously, but he can sing — and do so really well! Just here the studio cover of “My Life” for Billy Joel Week, and you’ll see him harness his energy far better than he did during the entire live show.

We really seen Heejun as going one way or the other — he will either blow the competition out of the water with a great performance (and keep himself from the bottom), or disappoint again and be out the door. Since some people want him gone this week even to the point of them being cruel about it, he doesn’t really have much to lose.

Contestant in biggest danger – Hollie Cavanagh needs to mix it up desperate. While she hasn’t been in the bottom three once so far, we see a Pia Toscano exit coming unless she tries to take on a faster song in the near future. Voters get tired of hearing the same thing, and it doesn’t matter how good of a voice you have.

Contestant who could bomb and still be safe – Phillip Phillips. We don’t understand Phillip’s popularity fully, but everyone loves the guy, how he mixes up songs, and his defiance to the people that want him to change. At this point he think he could pull a Megan Joy and make chicken noises and escape the bottom 3.

Contestant who needs to turn it around – For the first two weeks, we thought Skylar Laine was going to be poised to go incredibly far in this competition. Now, we’re starting to worry as her song choices have become increasingly underwhelming.

Thanks to her getting an opportunity to delve back into country this week, we do think that she is poised for a comeback. As for how far this comeback will take her, that is currently to be seen.

Who do you think is in the best position to succeed? Be sure to leave your comments below, and check back Wednesday night (as always) for a full look at the performances.
