‘Vampire Diaries’ star Ian Somerhalder honored at Genesis Awards

He has helped raise awareness

Ian Somerhalder has never been one to shy away from hot topic issues, and as his star continues to rise, more and more fans are taking notice of his work as an animal and environmental activist resulting in fans now finding ways to become involved themselves.

On Saturday night, the ‘Vampire Diaries’ star was honored for his work raising awareness on animal rights issues at the Genesis Awards.  Somerhalder has been doing everything in his power to campaign against the slaying of animals, Canada’s seal cull as well as shark finning.  The actor has also set up the ‘Ian Somerhalder Foundation’ to help bring people’s attention to the global issues surrounding animal rights and environmental problems.

Somerhalder was on hand in Los Angeles on Saturday night to accept the Wyler Award for his hard work and as always the actor found a way to include his fans in his achievement.  Ian posted a few messages on his Twitter account letting fans know where he was and what he was doing.  He said; “Amazing night- thank you HSUS,CW,Warner bros, & @verschoo for letting me come to LA this weekend.Most of all thank you ISF for tirelessly waging war on the imbalances&injustices in the world&standing up for those who have no voice.Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.”

Ian’s Wyler Award

At the end of his exciting night at the Genesis Awards, Somerhalder took his Wyler award home with him and said that he planned to sleep with it.  He posted a picture of his award along with a message that read; “Sleeping next to me tonight.”
