As if finding out the news about Michonne during “The Walking Dead” finale Sunday night was not enough, we’ve also now learned some big news when it comes to who will be playing the character during the AMC series’ upcoming third season.
During the post-show “Talking Dead” event Sunday, show source writer Robert Kirkman confirmed that Danai Gurira (best know for her work on HBO’s “Treme”) is going to be a series regular for the third season as the katana-wielding character. To say that Michonne is memorable would be an understatement — she is without a doubt one of the comic’s most-popular characters, and she is also someone that we have been asked about as an addition to the series for months.
Originally, it was “True Blood” actress Rutina Wesley who was rumored for the part, but that seemed to be based more on the hope of some fans than any actual evidence out there. While the fate of Wesley’s Tara on the HBO drama is in the balance, most people still believe that she will be around Bon Temps with Sookie Stackhouse in some shape or form.
In the end, Kirkman and Glen Mazarra really couldn’t have chosen a better actress for the part — Gurira has some serious acting chops, and Michonne is a role that should endear her to an entirely new group of fans. With this casting, Gurira joins David Morrissey (The Governor) as the new additions for season 3.
