Regardless of the fact that Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi is now expecting her first child with Jionni LaValle, it seems that “Jersey Shore” as a phenomenon may be close to played out.
On Thursday night, the season 5 finale for the show ended up drawing a grand total of nearly 5 million viewers, in addition to a 2.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic. If you look at these numbers through the lens of the rest of cable TV, then this is still a rather massive number that MTV as a whole is probably pretty satisfied with. However, you also have to remember that this was a show that at one point drew over 8 million viewers along with an 18-49 rating that made almost every show not named “American Idol” jealous.
It’s possible that defenders of Snooki and company could claim that since the “Shore” was filmed far before Snooki’s pregnancy that none of this really matters? Sure, but there’s really no way of knowing if anyone not currently watching the show are going to be excited all over again to see someone who they should know pretty well by now in a spin-off — especially since she’s not going to be involved in the same sort of hard-partying lifestyle that she once had. (Plus, it’s not like her spin-off co-star Jenni “Jwoww” Farley is going to be able to do much partying on her own.)
One of the real tests for the “Shore” longevity will be seeing how Pauly D’s “The Pauly D Project” fares in March — but until then, we just have to wonder if the once-popular (and controversial) reality franchise is losing some of its edge.
