Mrs. Carter: Another TLC show is going through a split … even if they are handling it in a different way than they have in the past.
If you remember back to 2009, the network became a hotbed of controversy and tabloid filler when Jon and Kate Gosselin split, which in turn caused “Jon and Kate Plus 8” to turn into chaos. While the ratings at the time were enormous, there was constant criticism into how the family was going to handle something so delicate, while at the same time being on reality TV. Suffice it to say, it didn’t go well.
Now, there is a similar-but-also-different situation going down with “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.” TMZ reported that Mama June and Sugar Bear, the two parents at the center of the show, have split up after he was discovered using some online dating websites. The two were never actually married like the Gosselins, but have been together for quite a long time. In a statement, June had the following to say:
“Sugar Bear and I have decided to take some time apart to figure out some things in our relationship. We are taking things day by day but regardless of what happens the girls will always be our #1 priority. We want to thank ya’ll for your support.”
Based on what the website reports, the plan is to continue filming the show, and Sugar Bear will continue to be a part of it moving forward. This should be an easier transition if the split continues than what we saw with the Gosselins. For one, many of June’s children are older, and are more accustomed to their situation in life. Meanwhile, Alana (a.k.a. Honey Boo Boo herself) is the only child that Sugar Bear and June had together; her other kids came from previous relationships. Trying to keep track of this show’s family tree is a chore in itself.
In the end, things will probably be okay for Honey Boo Boo and company. Ratings-wise, as horrible as it is to say, this will probably be a good thing for the show. After all, it was starting to fade from the headlines after being an internet sensation a couple of years ago.
