In taking a look ahead to next week’s new episode of “American Idol,” we really have three things that are especially of note:
1. The theme – In once again digging back from music that is older than most of these contestants, the top 10 will be tackling the songs of Billy Joel. At least this is a theme that has not been dragged down into the ground, and there are a number of interesting songs (“You May Be Right,” “Piano Man,” “Only the Good Die Young”) that could sound rather interesting in the hands of the right performer.
Of course, there are going to be some major challenges with Joel’s songbook when it comes to style — we personally think that Joshua Ledet could have the biggest challenge as a soul / gospel singer, but he has also met every challenge thus far with enthusiasm.
2. Haley Reinhart – We’ve been saying this for about a week now, but Haley is going to returning to the stage on March 22 in order to perform her debut single “Free.” Let’s just hope Randy Jackson doesn’t hate it because he’s never heard the song before.
3. Lana Del Rey – From an “Idol” standpoint, Del Rey’s presence is not really important at all. However, we are stoked to see what she does with her biggest ever live performance since stirring up a mountain of controversy on “Saturday Night Live” earlier this year.
If nothing else, Lana is brave — she’s performing the same song in “Video Games” that so many people hated on “SNL.”
What are you most excited for when it comes to next week?
