All in all, season 3 of “The Vampire Diaries” has been a bit inconsistent. Now that Klaus is revealing and running around Mystic Falls, some of the mystery about what he is up to is now gone. It’s also a little unclear why the show is dragging its feet when it comes to resolving the story involving the Originals … though we do admit we love having Joseph Morgan and Claire Holt around as long as possible.
While we did not get much of the Originals this week, the show did take a major step closer to resolving one of the key mysteries Thursday night — the Mystic Falls murderer. For quite a while, it appeared as though the #1 suspect was Torrey DeVitto’s Meredith Fell. After all, she set up Alaric to be arrested, and there have also been plenty of people around her who have ended up dead. The good news for Meredith? There was some evidence that cleared her name as the killer, even though it’s creepy to a jaw-dropping degree that she has a number of records and journals in her closet of some of the other founding families. Alaric ultimately found himself free at the end of the episode, and it was even Dr. Fell’s own doing — though she probably did this to preemptively keep master sleuths Elena and Matt from airing out their discoveries.
The biggest surprise at the end of this? That Meredith may not have been as crazy as any of us thought, and her journal-collecting habit may also not be so bizarre. As it turns out, the real killer here looks to be none other than … Samantha Gilbert and Alaric? While the episode didn’t necessarily make it abundantly clear, the real implication here seemed to be that the holder of the mystical “live forever” ring is blacking out, and consequently going on some sort of killing spree. After all, there’s only so many times you can cheat death without deciding to take some lives of your own (at least this seems to be the philosophy of the writers here), and Meredith seems to have been trying to figure this out.
As for seeing Cassidy Freeman’s Sage, it actually felt almost like an afterthought in the middle of everything else that was going on the episode. The boxer / vampire was indeed responsible for helping to turn Damon into the man that he now is — and it turn, Damon turned Stefan into the blood-addict that he is. The real question is just what Sage is going to do moving forward on the show, since recent photos have shown that she is clearly not done.
What did you think of this episode, and of the killer reveal?
