‘American Idol’ alumni notes: Haley Reinhart, Scotty McCreery’s covers

Here’s the cover.

Covers are a partial theme of a special edition of these “American Idol” notes — mostly because we usually only have so much news for one of them in a day.

Without further ado, let’s dive in!

Haley’s “Free” cover – As you can see to the left, Haley Reinhart has just unveiled her new single cover for “Free,” and it is in many ways a retro fan’s paradise. Just about everything in this photo screams 1960s, from the image fade to the lettering to even the pose.

While we’re still unsure how Haley will actually do as an artist away from the “Idol” community, we have to give Interscope credit. They’ve taken their time establishing Haley’s identity, and in between the sound of her music and the promotional material they may be prepping her to succeed more so than any third-place “Idol” finisher in the past.

A different sort of cover for Scotty McCreery – Just how much is “Idol” riding the Scotty train at the moment? Just to make sure no one forgets about him, they have decided to make their exit song this year a cover of Tim McGraw’s “Please Remember Me.”

David Cook, Carrie Underwood, and Ruben Studdard are some of the past “Idol” winners to receive this honor in the past. (Chris Daughtry’s hit “Home” has also played in the past.) It’s smart business on “Idol’s” part to keep their past singers fresh in viewers’ minds, and we actually wish every artist ever on this show had an opportunity to do something like this.

Paul: writing for vampires?

Paul McDonald’s “Twilight” dream – No, the quirky singer from last year is not trying to play a vampire. However, it does seem as though Paul has some aspirations to write a song for the upcoming “Breaking Dawn Part 2” soundtrack if producers are interested in it happening.

Speaking to MTV News, Paul’s other half Nikki Reed said the following about what he has going on:

“Paul has been speaking with them about potentially attempting to write something … Nothing is set in stone. He will be working on songs to submit. It would be a great, great thing. The music supervisor [Alexandra Patsavas] on that, as well as [director] Bill Condon, have great taste.”

A mini-reunion of sorts – We’ll leave you with this tweet from Pia Toscano, which suggests that she and another season 10 alum will be getting the opportunity to hang out on Wednesday:

“Guesss what??? @Lauren_Alaina & I will be reuniting tonight!!!!! I can’t wait to see my girl!”

Stay tuned as always for more from your “American Idol” stars!
