There have been a few television shows that have tried to do a modern twist on the classic story of ‘Sherlock Holmes’, but the new CBS pilot ‘Elementary’ has taken it to a whole new level.
‘Dexter’ guest star Jonny Lee Miller has been cast in the lead role as Holmes and with an incredibly strong actor like Miller in the lead, casting for Watson was going be a challenge for the network.
According to Entertainment Weekly, CBS has decided to turn the story of Sherlock Holmes upside down and give the role of Dr. John H. Watson to a woman, actress Lucy Liu. With Liu taking on the role of John Watson (Jane Watson?) in ‘Elementary’, many fans of the original Sir Arthur Conan Doyle story are not adapting well to the gender change, which is surprising since shows like ‘Once Upon a Time’ have been playing around with classic fairy tales storylines and no one seems to have any problem with that. In fact ‘Once Upon a Time’s’ Beauty and the Beast episode that found Belle falling in love with Rumpelstiltskin, two characters that were never together in the original fairytales, and that episode turned out to be one of the fan favorites.
‘Elementary’ takes place in New York City and finds Miller and Liu hitting the streets to solve crimes.
What do you think of CBS changing the character of Watson into a woman? Do you think that Lucy Liu is a good choice? Leave us a comment and let us know what you think.
