The 2012 Academy Awards yet again rang in at over three hours long — but we were still able to cut the show down nonetheless courtesy of three key moments that have us talking (and one of these didn’t even air during the show itself).
1. Ryan Seacrest meets some ashes – This didn’t even happen during the Oscars themselves, but it is still worth talking about. When he signed on for this job, he probably did not expect for Sacha Baron Cohen’s character from “The Dictator” to ultimately dump ashes all over him.
Seacrest was visibly upset, and his reaction actually made the moment all the more interesting (and viral for people looking for it on the internet).
2. Acceptance speeches via Jean Dujardin and Octavia Spencer – Out of the speeches we heard during the night, these were the two that were the most moving.
Spencer broke down in tears as she tearfully took the trophy for Best Supporting Actress, while Dujardin was the opposite — literally shouting with joy and kissing his co-stars over the news.
3. Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Patlrow – Out of all the introductions that we saw during the show, this clearly was one of the best — if for no other reason that Downey’s tremendous commitment to pretending like he was filming a documentary. With a lesser actor, this would not have been nearly as effective … but with Downey, he turned his chemistry with Gwyneth (and the people filming him around) into comedy gold.
