ABC’s hit show ‘Once Upon a Time’ gives viewers an opportunity to take a different look at some of their favorite fairy tales such as Cinderella Beauty and the Beast, Rumpelstiltskin and for the most part the audience is making a strong connection with the fairy tale mash-ups, but the one story that many viewers are having a difficult time buying into is the tale behind Snow White and Prince Charming.
In the fairytale world Prince Charming (Josh Dallas) is poising as the king’s son, and the king is desperately trying to force Charming into a marriage with a princess in an attempt to end a war between two countries, but his heart belongs to Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) and he escapes to try and find his true love. In the real world the evil queen has tried to keep David (Prince Charming) and Mary Margaret (Snow White) apart with her curse, but unfortunately for the queen, their love is stronger than the curse and they find themselves drawn to one another, regardless of the fact that David is married.
The problem viewers are having with this romance is that David and Mary Margret are so unlikeable that it makes it difficult for viewers to root for them. Mary Margret is made out to look like a home wrecking doormat and David is a liar and a cheater. So what does ABC plan to do with this story to redeem these to characters?
Executive producers, Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis sat down with the Hollywood Reporter and gave a little insight into what ABC has planned for these star crossed lovers. Kitsis said;
“The whole idea of the show is that Storybrooke is cursed and therefore what we love is the idea that their love is so strong it keeps pulling them together no matter how hard we try to keep them apart. One of our favorite things is the fact that I love that the audience is mad that David cheated, but he’s married to Snow White. And in Storybrooke, he has all this guilt of cheating on Kathryn, but the truth is that’s the curse.”
Horowitz added that there are some big plans for these two characters and hopes that viewers will enjoy the outcome. He said;
“We do have a plan for them and we are building to something with them this season and we’re excited to share that with you, just not today, but yes there is a plan and a definite build that we’re trying to do and we hope people enjoy wherever we take them. Yeah, and is he cheating on Snow White by being with Kathryn? To us there’s a level of complexity that we’re trying to build with these relationships and making nothing easy for our characters. So, when they do achieve the things they want to achieve its all the more satisfying hopefully.”
