It has been almost six years since we last saw Star Jones on ‘The View’, but today she returned and opened up about her controversial departure from the talk show.
Jones was one of the original hosts of ‘The View’ and left the series without much of an explanation, but some speculated that her contract was not renewed by ABC, due to her nondisclosure of a gastric bypass surgery as well as an alleged attempt to snag a few freebies for her wedding.
Finally fans have a bit of closure as to what the reasons were behind Star’s abrupt departure from the show as she reluctantly opened up about the past.
Barbara Walters explained that originally when Star’s contract was up and ABC decided not to renew, and Jones was offered the opportunity to say whatever she wanted to protect herself and leave the show in a planned way, but Star decided to surprise everyone and announce her departure on ‘The View’ at a different time. Walters pressed Jones for a reason behind her decision for doing that and finally Star gave in. She said;
“It was ugly, everything around was ugly. It was a bad emotional time. Nasty things were being said in the media, it was just not a good emotional time. I take real responsibility for my own behavior at all times, but I won’t take responsibility if I have not made a decision I can live with and I made the decision that I wanted to go out on my own terms. I wanted to be able to control it, so that when I walk back in here, if I was ever invited, I would feel good about coming in.”
When Walters pushed Star to talk about her dramatic weight loss and called her out about the fact that she wasn’t entirely open with her fans about the situation, Jones said that she felt it was a private matter. She said;
“I didn’t feel safe enough to come out and talk about it.”
