‘Glee’ season 5, episode 20 review: Did Blaine dump Kurt, and who kissed Rachel?
Tuesday night’s “Glee” episode brought plenty of drama with it, and there were times that we were laughing more than we have in several seasons. The show had run out of steam when it came to mocking high school, but they had quite a bit of fun mocking the entertainment industry.
The entire presentation of Fox and the audition process tonight was very amusing, especially since Jim Rash’s character was the show spoofing seemingly NBC’s Robert Greenblatt and ABC’s Paul Lee at the same time. Rachel made the decision to audition for a show out at the network in Los Angeles, but the problem with this was that she in the process had called in sick for a Broadway show. This audition looked to be a disaster; plus, her would-be co-star kissing her was the most uncomfortable thing of all time.
Santana ultimately “saved” Rachel by filling in for her, but this wasn’t that much of a fill-in at all. Her future with the show was still in question.
While Rachel was going through all of her problems in Los Angeles, there were some notable stories for some other familiar faces. Blaine ended up spending most of his time with June (Shirley MacLaine), and then proceeded to lie to Kurt about it and even said that he’d have a part in a showcase he was working with her on. The real story is that she wants Blaine to break up with Kurt … but that hasn’t happened yet.
In the end, Rachel was threatened with a lawsuit and a potential firing if she ever does something like this again … and was still in turn offered a development deal in TV. We don’t know what this means yet for “Funny Girl,” but it looks like she can still do the show for now.
So despite its somber moments and a Mercedes / Santana story that was pretty useless, “The Back-Up Plan” was still a decent “Glee” episode. It wasn’t perfect, but it did at least make us laugh. Grade: B-.
