When fans heard that JC Penney landed Ellen DeGeneres as their spokeswoman they couldn’t be more excited for the talk show host, but there was one group of people that were so upset that the company hired a gay spokesperson that they demanded the retailer reconsider their decision and fire DeGeneres immediately.
The family values group ‘One Million Moms’ put some serious pressure on JC Penney to cut DeGeneres from their promotions otherwise they were going to stop shopping with the retailer. They claimed that by having a gay spokesperson the company was going against family values. JC Penney quickly denied the group’s request and is standing behind their decision to have DeGeneres represent the company.
On Wednesday’s episode of ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ the comedian responded to the demands of the family values group and commented on JC Penney’s decision to stand by her side throughout the situation. She said;
“I’m proud and happy to say that JC Penney stuck by their decision to make me their spokesperson. Which is great news for me because I also need some new crew socks. I’m really going to clean up with this discount.”
Ellen went on to say that she rarely “[talks] about stuff like this”, but wanted to use the opportunity to “thank everyone who is supporting” her. She also opened up to the viewers about what she stands for and what “traditional values” means to her. She said;
“If you’re just watching maybe for the first time or you’re just getting to know me, I want to be clear. Here are the values I stand for: I stand for honesty, equality, kindness, compassion, treating people the way you’d want to be treated and helping those in need. To me, those are traditional values.”
DeGeneres added that she hoped that the situation would go away after JC Penney’s decision to stand by her, but One Million Moms has not let it go and has posted a message on their official Facebook page that read;
“By jumping on the pro-gay bandwagon, JC Penney is attempting to gain a new target market and in the process will lose customers with traditional values that have been faithful to them over all these years. The majority of JC Penney shoppers will be offended and choose to no longer shop there.”
Ellen’s full response will be airing on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ today, but in the mean time you can check out a clip from the show below.
