When ‘Parks and Recreation’ first came on the scene not everyone was completely sold on the series, but now that we are going into season 4 it’s clear to see why fans are hooked on the show.
One of the great things about ‘Parks and Recreation’ that sets this series apart from the rest is that the show isn’t afraid to take risks and shake up the stale comedy format a bit. The masterminds behind the series shocked fans when they introduced a romance between Ann (Rashida Jones) and Tom (Aziz Ansari) and now viewers want to know if it’s going to last or if it will be fleeting. Executive Mike Schur spoke to E! News about the burgeoning relationship between Tom and Ann and revealed that writing team had been plotting to hook these two up since season three. He said;
“It’s real. Tom and Ann are dating and will have a relationship for some amount of time. We have a lot of soul-matey relationships, with Leslie (Amy Poehler) and Ben (Adam Scott) and Andy (Chris Pratt) and April (Aubrey Plaza) and we just wanted to do a comedy relationship. It’s real, but it’s not soulfully gazing into each other eyes and running off to get married after three weeks. We’re going for a different relationship, which is a pair of mismatched people who are very gingerly having a couple drinks here and there to see if they’re compatible.”
Although the romance twist did come as a bit of a surprise to most fans, Schur said that it really isn’t that unbelievable considering the circumstances surrounding these characters. He explains;
“You have this small, loser town filled with loser people and Tom’s at least kind of cool. The reality is, if you were a young attractive woman in Pawnee, and you worked with a guy who’s kinda cool even if he’s a dope, at some point you’d say, let’s just try it. There are certainly people affected by [Tom and Ann’s relationship], most specifically is April. Because she’s the person who got them together, they’re constantly complaining about each other to her, and she decides the only way she can get through it is to get drunk. So she gets really really drunk at 4 in the afternoon. It’s sort of an April, Tom and Ann triangle as far as who’s affected.”
If there are any ‘Parks and Recreation’ fans that were secretly hoping that Leslie and Ron might end up together you might as well forget that dream. Schur reveals that the writing staff has never even contemplated hooking those two up. He said;
“The one thing we’ve never contemplated at any level is Leslie and Ron. I know there are people who are Leslie and Ron shippers, as they say, but their relationship is so great as platonic friends without any hint of any interest in each other. It’s like Lou Grant and Mary Tyler Moore. They will never date. We will never do that.”
If you are one of the few people out there that hasn’t had a chance to check out ‘Parks and Recreation’ you can catch it on NBC, Thursdays at 8:30.
