For those of you who are not all that interested watching the New England Patriots take on the New York Giants at Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis, there is a cute furry alternative.
The ‘Puppy Bowl’ is back for its 8th season on Animal Planet with a brand new all star cast of sweet faced puppies ready to score some touch downs and win the hearts of fans everywhere. New to the broadcast this year is Meep the Bird who will be tweeting all of the tail raising action from inside the stadium. There will also be an appearance from the piggy pep squad who will be cheering on their favorite players.
There is a new referee to the ‘Puppy Bowl’ this year named Dan Schachner, a television host and commercial actor. Schachner spoke to Animal Planet about how he landed the job as the ref at this year’s ‘Puppy Bowl’. He said;
“When I first found out Animal Planet was on the hunt for a new Puppy Bowl ref, I knew my true calling in life had come. I quickly grabbed my camcorder and sent in an audition tape highlighting my puppy refereeing skills and sense of humor. To my surprise, they “bit”, and now I’m calling the most important game of my life!”
This year the starting lineup has some pretty tough competitors ready to take home the trophy. There is an Australian Shepherd mix (Aberdeen), a Pit Bull mix (Anthony), a Border Collie mix (Hollie), and a Chihuahua/Dachshund mix (Gracie) just to name a few. As of February 3rd, 57 of the 59 puppies involved in the bowl have already been adopted.
The ‘Puppy Bowl’ has grown in popularity over the years and now has some strong celebrity support behind the event. Some of the famous faces that will be tuning in today to catch all of the doggy highlights are ‘New Girl’ star Zooey Deschanel, ‘Bridesmaids’ director Paul Feig and former ‘Real Housewives of New Jersey’ star Dina Manzo. Here are a few tweets they posted about the ‘Puppy Bowl’;
Zooey Deschanel – “I’m super excited about puppy bowl Sunday.”
Paul Feig – “Puppy Bowl Sunday and the air is crackling with excitement in the Feig household.”
Dina Manzo – “SO Excited for PUPPY BOWL!!!!!!!!! who’s with me?”
Some of the highlights from the game were Fumble getting into a fight with Oscar and getting flagged for rough housing. Later Oscar ends up getting flagged himself for ‘pawing’ as he knocks out a few puppies to get to the ball. Fumble scores the first touch down of the game and also ends up scoring a second touch down by distracting his opponents and then walks free and clear down the field to the goal line. Shiloh also showed some spunk as she snagged two touchdowns as well, but by the end of the second quarter Fumble scores a third touchdown.
While many enjoy the Puppy Bowl, the one thing that fans look forward to every year is the kitty half time show and this year did not disappoint. Along with an exciting light show the cutest kittens on the planet strutted their stuff across the stage and played with their toys.
All in all Puppy Bowl VIII brought all the thrills and chills the fans expected to see and as always the puppies have found great homes in the process.
