Interesting to consider that in seven years (the zenith of popularity in the classic era), Tom met the Daleks just twice, the Cybermen once, the Sontarans twice and the Master three times (twice as part of the concluding arc to bridge into a new phase).

Come to think of it, Pertwee was at it for five years and what was the score? Master-heavy, to be sure, but only three Dalek stories and he never faced a single Cyberman.

Of course, the classic monsters are sort of Who archetypes, and it's easy to analyse any one-off baddie as a cocktail of them. But overusing the pure stereotypes, rather than at least combining them in different ways, weakens them. The one-offs were interesting and the return of the biggies was an event.

It used to be: "wow, they're back!" Now it's: "oh, it's them again. And this time they can suck your face off, fly, turn into Power Rangers, sprout metal tentacles from their empty heads, move in bullet time, turn into wood, lactate for comic effect, etc, etc."

Just look at how Moffat has diluted his own brilliant contribution, the Weeping Angels, by overuse and over-elaboration.

I can understand that Capaldi wants a Dalek story - you aren't really the Doctor until you've had one, are you? But if his run is going to be a return to older ideas, then can we please stop having Daleks and Cybermen and Sontarans and ... and ... and let's have K9 too, and Yeti and Silurians and cake and lots and lots of ice cream. In space, with nuns and Nazis and dinosaurs, and a parallel plot in Victorian bleeding London, Billie Piper yet again and Ant and Dec and One Direction and... and River Song turning up as the clown at her own fifth birthday party. All in one episode. Where the peril will be ramped up to such heights that even Murray Gold's orchestra are doomed to never having ever even existed, only for the whole thing to be waved away at the last minute as an elaborate alternate reality cheese nightmare.
