You know that the North American box office is in a strange place when the biggest success story is a $140 million film opening to just $13 million — but that’s what we saw this time around.
Really, “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” can tout this weekend as a victory simply because it grossed its total in just 425 IMAX or other large-screen theaters — meanwhile, it took “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” 3,700 theaters to make it over the $40 million mark at #1. “Ghost Protocol” will expand out to all theaters beginning on Wednesday, and business is once again expected to be lucrative. You can thank Tom Cruise for this success — but you can also thank the preview for “The Dark Knight Rises” airing before the movie.
As for the other stories worth talking about from the weekend, “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked” grossed around half of its last installment in its first weekend with just $23 million — and even though it will likely hold up well over the holiday season, many of the last movie’s fans are now a bit older, and likely a bit fed up with Alvin, Simon, and Theodore.
Are you hoping to see “Ghost Protocol” soon?
