After many subpar weeks at the American box office, it appears as though things are finally starting to turn around — and you really have Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law to thank for it.
On Friday, “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” pulled in $14.7 million on Friday — which puts it on par for an opening in the $45 million range. Warner Bros. was not expecting the film to equal the gross of the first movie (which was over $60 million and helped by the Christmas holiday), but the hope was that it would still make it to $50 million for the weekend.
Meanwhile, “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked” ended up being a tad of a disappointment — though not necessarily a wreck. The film is going to be lucky to finish with $25 million after grossing under $7 million Friday — but even this overall gross would be far under $42.5 million — which was the weakest opening in the franchise before this movie hit theaters.
There was still, however, something to celebrate in this weekend — despite only being in 425 IMAX screens around the country, “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” grossed over $4 million on Friday — likely helped by the extensive preview to “The Dark Knight Rises” that aired beforehand.
Are you hitting the theaters this weekend?
