‘The Dark Knight Rises’: Tom Hardy was always in mind for Bane

Coming summer 2012.

It appears that it was the hope of Christopher Nolan and company to cast Tom Hardy as the character of Bane on “The Dark Knight Rises” from the very beginning — but for a while, it didn’t seem particularly likely that it was going to happen.

Speaking out in a new interview, producer Emma Thomas said that Hardy’s prior commitments at first made it difficult to approach him with this role:

“We already knew that Bane was the villain when we were shooting ‘Inception’. And actually as we were shooting, we did talk about how, wow, Tom would be perfect for Bane. We talked about that pretty early on. The issue that we had was that Tom was going to be doing another movie. He was committed to be in ‘Fury Road‘, and we knew he wasn’t available. So every conversation that we had about how Tom was perfect to be Bane was sort of tinged with regret because we knew he couldn’t be. So as soon as we found out that that movie had pushed we approached him.”

Nolan has already said that his take on the character will focus primarily on Bane’s “strength,” and how he will pose as a far different sort of threat to Bruce Wayne than what we saw previously in “The Dark Knight” with the Joker.

Do you think Hardy is the perfect choice for this role?
