For the second straight week, it looks like we are probably going to have a bit of a quiet three-day period at the American box office. Despite having just about every big name imaginable as a part of the cast, “New Year’s Eve” is looking to open with a modest figure in the $20 million range. The movie grossed somewhere between $6 and $7 million on Friday night.
The good news for the movie is that it should continue to hold on throughout the holiday season as one of the few romantic comedies out there — even with some terrible reviews. The bad news? This number is far less than the $70-plus opening for “Valentine’s Day” during its President’s Day-extended frame.
Meanwhile, the Jonah Hill comedy “The Sitter” is looking to barely gross over $7 million in its first weekend — and the only real winners here seem to be “Hugo” and “The Descendants,” which continue to bring in solid business leading up to awards season (though exact figure are not yet available).
Are you planning to see anything this weekend?
