Despite it being the holiday season, we ultimately saw one of the slowest weekends of the year at the American box office. There was not a single new film in the top 12, and most of the films that were at the top of the charts took some steep declines.
Ultimately, “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn (Part 1)” was declared the winner courtesy of a $16.9 million gross. While this is far and away less from what we saw from the film during its opening weekend, it had ended up grossing a grand total of $247 million thus far.
As for the biggest drop of the weekend, it surprisingly ended up going to “The Muppets.” Despite having rave reviews in addition to a strong response from viewers, the family film only brought in $11.2 million. Luckily, we are looking at a picture here with a fairly modest budget of just $45 million, and it has already grossed over $56. (It could still make money over the holidays, when many families will have the time to check it out.)
As for the rest of the top five, the only real thing worth noting is that “Hugo” added some theaters and landed in the top three — a sign that the Martin Scorsese picture is gaining some stead after some heavy critical acclaim.
Did you head to the theaters this weekend?
